To help you plan, organize, and execute your move, here is a list of 10 surprisingly easy moving hacks:
- Colour code everything. Colour coding will save you time, reduces the need for questions, and makes the unpacking process so much easier. This will help you settle quickly and enjoy your new home faster.
- Get an early start. From finding your moving supplies to packing up your belongings, you should start planning your relocation at least one month in advance. This will give you the freedom to pace yourself, take your time, and most importantly, avoid any panic.
- Don’t use old boxes. Trying to move your prized possessions in beat-up old boxes puts them at a high risk for damage. Instead, search for good quality moving supplies from your office or local businesses such as liquor or bookstores, which you can often get for free.
- Keep an inventory. Before you move, you should label your boxes and keep an inventory of what’s in them. This ensures that you’ll know what’s in each box and if one goes missing, you’ll be able to replace what was lost, file a police report, and of course file an insurance claim.
- Make a moving supplies basket. Save yourself from losing packing supplies such as scissors or tape by creating a box/basket for supplies that you can carry with you from room to room. That way you’ll have it all with you as you switch tasks and you won’t waste any time.

- Use a rubber band to keep your front door unlocked. When you’re moving boxes into the truck, you’ll be going in and out of your house a lot. Wrap a rubber band around one doorknob and stretch it around the door to wrap the other end on the opposite knob. This will keep your door from accidentally shutting.
- Keep your liquids separate Whatever liquids you have, be it cleaning supplies or shampoos, make sure to keep them in a separate bin. If they spill or fall during the move and you’ve put them in with other valuables, they’ll soak and spoil everything.
